Kyoto, Japan

Destination

When should you visit Kyoto?

Kyoto rewards good timing more than almost any city in Japan. Cherry blossom and autumn colour bring the biggest crowds of the year, while the quieter months offer empty temple paths, softer prices and a more atmospheric city. Here is how each month really feels, so you can choose the version of Kyoto you want.

My recommendation

October

Clear, dry days and comfortable temperatures make October ideal for walking the city, and Jidai Matsuri parades through Kyoto on 22 October. The autumn-colour crowds only arrive in November.

Plum blossom, no queues

Late Feb–mid Mar

Kitano Tenmangu and Baiko-en are in bloom while the sakura crowds are still weeks away.

Dining over the river

May–Sep

Kawadoko terraces on the Kamogawa and in Kibune, where the cooler air makes summer lunches easy.

Moss gardens in the rain

June

Rainy season turns Gio-ji and other moss temples a deep, glowing green with few visitors.

Colour after the crush

Early Dec

Late maples still hold at several temples, without the late-November crowds.

Snow on the temples

Late Jan–Feb

A few mornings a winter, Kinkaku-ji in snow is quiet and unforgettable.

Plan around

What to know before you book

Cherry blossom

Late Mar–early Apr

Peak bloom usually falls between the last days of March and the first week of April, but it shifts every year. Book flights and hotels 3-4 months ahead.
Autumn foliage

Mid Nov–early Dec

Colour typically peaks in late November. This is the busiest and most expensive period, and hotels sell out far in advance.
Golden Week

29 Apr–5 May

Japan's domestic travel peak. Trains, hotels and major sights are packed, so book early or avoid these dates.

Start early, finish late

Kyoto's icons are calm before 8 a.m. Kiyomizu-dera opens at 6:00 and Fushimi Inari never closes, so see those first, then reach Arashiyama's bamboo grove before the tour buses arrive. Spend the afternoon in quieter corners like Nanzen-ji, and save the evening for Gion's back lanes and a slow dinner by the river.
