Cruise-ship day-trippers

June–September

Most of the midday crush arrives by coach from Messina and Catania. Visit Isola Bella and the Teatro Antico before 9am or after 5pm, and skip Corso Umberto between 11am and 4pm — the side streets running off it can feel surprisingly calm even in August.
Ferragosto and the Italian summer

July–August

August is the busiest month of the year, peaking around Ferragosto (15 August). Book restaurants, beach clubs and experiences well ahead. If you're staying several nights, use the busiest midday hours for a long lunch, the pool or the beach, and return to town once the day-trippers leave.
